Frequently Asked Questions

What is Aesthetic Dentistry?

Today, it is of great importance that the teeth have an aesthetic appearance as well as being functional and healthy. In parallel to this
aesthetic dentistry
applications have started to be preferred more frequently. The aim of aesthetic dentistry is to make the patient’s smile more beautiful while correcting the problem in the patient’s teeth. Aesthetic dentistry applications include composite fillings, ceramic or composite inlay and onlay applications, teeth whitening treatment, gummy smile treatment (gum aesthetics), porcelain laminates (leaf porcelain), full ceramics, zirconium and botox. Broken or worn teeth, missing teeth, misshapen teeth, malformed teeth, malpositioned teeth, gaps between teeth (diastema) and discoloration can be treated with aesthetic dentistry applications.

What is Smile Design?

In order to achieve smile aesthetics, aesthetic teeth and gums that appear in the appropriate amount during the smile are needed. The treatment in which this image is planned using various software is called smile design.
Smile design
First, portrait and intraoral photographs of the patient are taken and transferred to a software program. Together with the patient, the shape and dimensions of the new teeth are designed on the software. After the final shape of the teeth is decided in coordination with the patient, prosthetic preparations are made by removing some gingiva (gingivectomy) where necessary. The aim of smile design is to show the patient the teeth they will have at the end of the treatment before the treatment begins. In appropriate cases, the designs are transferred to the patient’s mouth and the patient has the chance to experience the design before the procedure. This practice not only increases patient-doctor communication, but also provides guidance to the physician and the laboratory during the procedures to be performed.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implant
is an evidence-based treatment method that has been used for many years in the treatment of tooth loss. In cases of total tooth loss, dental implants are applied to enable the patient to use a more comfortable prosthesis, whether fixed or removable. In partial (partial) tooth deficiencies, dental implants are applied to the toothless area to prevent the cutting of neighboring teeth and to maintain the integrity of the teeth. In most cases where the width or height of the bone is insufficient, implant applications can be successfully performed with various bone grafting procedures. During the procedures, no pain is felt after anesthesia. Although the success of dental implants depends on many factors, the lifespan of dental implants is directly proportional to the patient’s regular check-ups and proper oral care.

What are Gum Diseases?

Gum disease is a type of infectious disease that occurs as a result of the patient’s failure to provide effective and correct oral care or short brushing. Bleeding gums, gingival recession, swelling and edema in the gums are important signs of gum disease. Patients with these complaints should consult a periodontologist immediately. Antibiotics and mouthwashes used unconsciously without seeing a specialist doctor can cause the bone around the patient’s teeth to continue to melt, and after a while, the patient may lose his or her teeth. Scaling is definitely not a harmful procedure. It is important to remember that tartar actually contains bacteria. There are many treatment methods depending on the type and severity of the gum problem. When appropriate, bone grafting can be performed around the teeth to keep them in the mouth. After all gum treatments, regular oral care with the right technique and at the appropriate time is important to restore and maintain your gum health.

What is Gummy Smile?

Gummy smile is a condition in which the gums appear more than normal during maximum smiling. A gummy smile may be observed due to skeletal causes, delayed passive eruption or hyperactivity of the upper lip. Different treatment methods need to be planned for each factor. It is important to analyze your smile before treatment and to determine the personalized treatment method.

One or more of smile design, gingivectomy, botox applications and lip positioning surgeries (reverse vestibuloplasty) can be applied for their treatment.

How Is Teeth Whitening Treatment Performed?

The most preferred treatment method within the scope of cosmetic dentistry is teeth whitening treatments. There are 2 types of whitening methods: office whitening and home whitening. In office whitening, a special gel is applied to the tooth surfaces after a gingival barrier material is applied to the gums. The teeth are then whitened by activating the gel applied on the teeth with a special light source. This process takes about 1 hour. In the home whitening process, a special plate is prepared for the patient, the patient is given the gel to be applied and its use is described. The biggest advantage of office whitening is that it is applied by a professional. This keeps complications that may occur after whitening under control and allows immediate intervention. After teeth whitening treatments, especially for the first 72 hours, coffee, tea, red wine and colored foods should not be consumed.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of science in which dental irregularities and jaw-facial skeletal disorders are treated. There is no age limit for orthodontic treatments. It is not a treatment only for children or young people. Anyone with good oral hygiene and healthy teeth and gums can receive orthodontic treatment. Different dental and skeletal disorders require different treatment methods. Depending on the existing disorder, orthodontic treatment can be performed with transparent aligners as well as removable and fixed braces. The advantage of clear aligners over fixed braces is that there is no food restriction or difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene, as they are removed while eating and brushing teeth. It is also transparent, making it only noticeable from very close up.

What are Botox Applications?

In dentistry, botox applications are performed for tooth clenching (bruxism) and gummy smile treatments. Contrary to misconceptions, Botox does not paralyze the muscles, it only reduces the function of the muscles. Botox applied to the chewing muscles in the treatment of teeth clenching (bruxism) reduces the strength of the chewing muscles. It does not affect functions such as chewing, eating and speaking. It does not directly affect the patient’s clenching (bruxism), but it reduces the force on the teeth and joints as a result of clenching (bruxism) and thus reduces wear and joint problems in the teeth. In botox applications for gummy smile treatment, it is aimed to make the upper lip rise less when the patient smiles. The upper lip is not paralyzed, it is mobile; but because the upper lip muscles are not as strong as they used to be, the upper lip moves up less during laughter. The effect of Botox decreases and disappears after a while, but repeated applications at appropriate intervals provide some improvement in the permanent condition. Especially in the treatment of gummy smile, Botox applications are a minimally invasive treatment alternative that can be preferred instead of surgical methods.

What are Restorative Dental Applications?

Bacteria in the mouth metabolize the food we eat, resulting in the formation of acid. When we do not brush our teeth regularly and adequately, tooth decay occurs. Tooth aches and pains, especially sensitivity to sweets, are signs of tooth decay. In this case, the decay must be cleaned and filled. During this procedure, nothing other than vibration is felt during the procedure as anesthesia will be administered. It is painless. Superficial caries can be treated without anesthesia and painlessly. Today, amalgam filling is not preferred due to its disadvantages and composite, i.e. white fillings are used. In addition, inlay or onlay treatments (porcelain fillings) are applied to some teeth with extensive caries. Inlay and onlay methods are performed by taking impressions from decayed teeth that have too much material loss to be directly filled with composite, and bonding the piece prepared from composite or porcelain to the decayed part of your tooth on the model obtained. In addition to composite caries treatment, openings between teeth (diastemas) and small fractures can also be closed with aesthetic composite fillings.

What is Endodontics?

Root canal treatments are performed in the treatment of decays that reach the living part of the tooth (pulp) and teeth with infected canals. Fractured and traumatized teeth may also require root canal treatment. The presence of pain that does not go away, spontaneously, especially at night when lying down, swelling, discoloration of the tooth indicate the need for root canal treatment. During root canal treatments, pain is not felt after anesthesia applications. The infected pulp tissue inside the tooth is cleaned and the canal is shaped and washed. The channels are then filled with a biocompatible material that will ensure sealing. The pain goes away after root canal treatments, but in some cases there may be sensitivity at the root end of your tooth for a certain period of time. After root canal treatment, restorative or prosthetic procedures such as fillings, veneers or onlay-inlays are performed on your teeth.

What is Pedodontics?

Pedodontics is the branch of science that deals with the dental and jaw health of children from the moment the teeth first erupt. The most important goal of a pedodontist is to establish good communication with the child and to prepare the child to maintain oral hygiene and to come for regular check-ups, that is, preventive dentistry. Considering that the habits acquired in childhood last a lifetime, brushing your teeth is one of the most important habits you can teach your child, and regular dental check-ups are another. In order to gain these habits, getting help from a pedodontist is important for both parents and children in terms of transferring tooth brushing habits correctly. Preventive dentistry includes parent and child information, topical fluoride application, fissure sealant applications (if necessary). Apart from these, filling, amputation or extraction of teeth and zirconia or stainless steel crown applications are also performed after caries formation. The important thing to remember about children with phobias is that no fear or phobia arises spontaneously. Care should be taken not to discuss details of toothache and dental treatment in the presence of the child. It is also important not to give the child too much detailed information about the subject before treatment. When visiting the pedodontist, the child should be allowed to communicate directly with the doctor and this communication should not be interrupted by interruptions. In cases where the child is very scared, it would be a better approach to arrange the first session as an appointment just to meet and get to know the environment for your child. In this case, the child gets used to the environment by spending time with the doctor during the examination appointment. This allows for a more comfortable treatment at the next appointment. In children who are extremely afraid and do not have the opportunity for any treatment, dental treatments are performed with sedation and general anesthesia applications. These practices are very important in terms of preventing the progression of caries and its negative impact on the child’s daily life, disruption of eating and drinking habits, toothache, constant antibiotics and painkillers.
